Since this is basically a small gaming laptop with a controller built into it, I decided to run the same type of tests on it that I would for the best gaming laptops. Additionally, the Ally does not have Hall Effect joysticks, so while I didn't experience any issues while playing with them, it is possible that they could develop drift issues down the line. I was disappointed to find that the back bumper screenshot button I assigned only worked when I was playing games (since it uses Windows 11's Xbox Game Bar for screen capture), which feels shortsighted since the Steam Deck has a button combo that allows for screenshots at any point in or out of games. ![]() I quickly set one bumper as a screenshot button and the other as a Task Manager button. The Ally's controls feel very similar to an Xbox Controller layout and allow me to do just about anything I want to in just a few presses. Along with having the usual A, B, X, and Y buttons, triggers, joysticks, View button, and Menu button, the Ally also has two mappable bumper buttons on the back. Though, I find it slightly frustrating that they do turn on at first when the handheld is booted up and randomly blink while the handheld is sleeping and charging, even if I have the lights turned off in settings.ĭespite being larger than a Switch OLED, it's very lightweight and feels comfortable to hold for long stretches. I'm not a huge fan of RGB lighting (yes, I know I'm boring) as I consider them a waste of battery power, but thankfully, I can adjust the brightness of the lights around the joysticks or turn them off entirely. I guess this has to do with how the internal components are oriented since the backside casing doesn't get hot. The one thing I don't like about Ally's build quality is that after an hour or two of playing with it, the display gets really hot, which isn't good for the panel's longevity. The exhaust vents are on top of the device to keep them from blowing hot air in my face and hands, while the intake vents are on the backside. The Ally looks impressive with its sleek white casing. ![]() ![]() (3)Īccording to the British Journal of Sports Medicine, “In our studies, WBV exercise has been shown to acutely enhance strength and power capabilities in well trained people.” (4)īut it’s not just athletes that seem to benefit. In terms of research, several studies do seem to support the idea that vibration plate – especially when individuals exercise on them instead of just stand on then – has a positive effect on muscle strength, muscle mass, and recovery time. often twenty to fifty times per second.Because of that, some advocates say that ten minutes of WBV training is equal to one hour of conventional weight lifting. We had a limited amount of space – and a limited budget – to work with, so we had to be very selective about what equipment to invest in.Īs I mentioned above, vibration plates cause our muscle fibers to fire rapidly. Last year my husband and I started working out at home instead of a gym. But first, let’s take a look at what the research says. We’re still learning about which frequencies work best for different goals, and we’ll talk more about that later. Proponents of vibration therapy say that it’s helpful for supporting: But some scientists have proposed that the vibrations, when administered at the correct frequency, are actually reaching into the control systems of our muscles, forcing them to activate.” (2) Benefits of Whole Body Vibration Plate Therapy ^ ![]() It could be that WBV is simply forcing our muscles to compensate for extra stress, making them work harder and get stronger. ![]() One theory is that vibrational frequencies may have a “tuning” effect on our bodies, especially when the vibration matches the resonant frequency of muscle, bone, synovial fluid and other tissues. However, the mechanical effect on our muscles may just be part of what makes whole body vibration (WBV) unique. That adds up to one thousand to three thousand tiny little ‘reps’ per minute – much more work for your muscles than holding a position (static or isometric exercise) or typical repetition workouts.” (1) As the platform moves, it increases the gravitational force on our bodies, which prompts involuntary responses that help us maintain balance.Įvery muscle fiber will automatically tense and relax at the same rate that the machine is vibrating, usually twenty to fifty times per second. The multi-system effects are believed to be due to how vibration therapy increases the impact of gravity on our muscles, bone, cartilage, soft tissues, and joints. The vibration is thought to activate the circulatory, lymphatic, and nervous systems at the same time. Just like the name says, vibration plate therapy involves standing on a platform (plate) that vibrates either up-and-down or side-to-side (or both).

The Apple Watch Ultra also supports all the regular watch faces you're used to and new ones in WatchOS 9 including Metropolitan and Astronomy. I wish Apple had more than just one exclusive face for the Ultra, even though you could potentially tailor Wayfinder to have one for hiking, one for diving and one for everyday use, for example. But it's only available with the Wayfinder watch face. There is a night mode that turns all the elements red and is triggered by rotating the crown. It also includes a compass that indicates the north point when you rotate your wrist, and you can also view elevation data. It has room for up to eight complications, so you can heavily customize the look and feel of this face to whatever activity you choose. Similar to the Sport Loop from earlier Apple Watches, it has velcro to ensure a precise fit. The Trail Loop with pull tab is the most practical for everyday use because it's slightly elasticized and it's the one I default to the most. You can also use the Action button to launch Shortcuts once you've set up the app on your iPhone and I love the additional flexibility this gives. But Apple's implementation is arguably easier to use, and I hope to see even more customization options added in future software updates. Other sports and outdoor watches have similar ways to customize buttons, such as the hot keys on Garmin watches. ![]() ![]() I'd like to see Apple add some of these customization features into other Apple Watches, so you could swap out the multitasking function of the side button to launch a workout instead, for example.
